Yesterday I spend 3 hours in the koppie kopie
letting all the others wait, while printing the last 800 pages,
fieuw! Good I've let Afreux stencil the others...
They've cut 100 black on black pages wrong!!!

So today I went cutting somewhere else,
Afreux did a great job.
after that I pressed the covers, so now I can start hammering holes.

7th of june I'll be starting binding the books.
still lots of colouring and pressing to do.

I used a cartonback of a bur-o-class notebook for the cover,
it was the only carton that made the ink and the imprint look nice.
No other did the trick, I searched EVERYWHERE to get that exact same carton, but no paperstore had it.
So I took the phone and had a call with Joris Vranckx, from the bur-o-class, aurora company, to see if I could get some of their paper-backs. A few hours later I could go pick it up somewhere in Beerse,

The most impressive thing i've seen on Time Canvas was this speaking piano,

At first a lot of noise is coming out of one piano, but then when you read the text you recognize the words,

and eventually, you'll hear them clearly.

I thought there was a robot-voice overlay, but it's really only the piano speaking.

It's amazing.

I found a NWT magazine of 1984 in a second hand shop,

There was an extended article of Glenn Gould inside,

A man Angela put in her top 10 Hypnotic / psychedelic records, that will be published in the magazine.

She writes about his 'the Goldberg variations' lp that came out in 1955

"This might just be the most psychedelic record of all time, period. Sure, it's just some guy playing Bach on piano. And he's a neurotic Canadian loner with an underdeveloped sense of humor at that. But just try following those lines of counterpoint. Concentrate now. Can you keep track of a melody as it peels off the main frame & bumps around like a rickety roller coaster, broiling faster & faster until it flutters like a streamer? Okay, how about when there's two or three different lines pulling apart & fusing together simultaneously? Throw in a characteristic creaky chair & some humming, and you've got a focus overload that can cause a kind of hallucinatory frisson. It's from all that blinding clarity jumbling up against itself. No wonder they put Gould on the Voyager space record. The guy built

LEO COOMANS compiled a bunch of unheard and beautiful basement recordings, collecting the period he mainly played in the Antwerp jazz and artist bars! This rather modest man made seriously strange outsider weirdness instead of free jazz from hell. Kicking of with AEROSOL, duo undertone singing to a aerosol machine he had to use for his asthma! WATERMUZIEK, playing with a bunch of tubes, saxophones, mouthpieces and his own voice in a bath tub half filled with water! Untitled droning harmonica pieces which clearly shows his link with raga folks like Wannes Van de Velde and such! Vacuum cleaner attached to metals and soprano saxes!! A wacko piano and vacuumcleaner cover version of LOUIE LOUIE...
The cover design is 2 live shots, on one of which he uses the aerosol machine. It also comes with an insert with more photos!"

A true outsider artist, a visionary theorist, a musician, a composer, a filmmaker, a performance-artist. His longest running musical project is Idea Fire company.

He has is own Swill Radio label.

In 1997 Foust, along with Borecky and Dr. Timothy Shortell,
founded the Anti-Naturals, an art and theory group which has few but
dedicated members worldwide.

Ignace De Bruyn is helping me out with writing and gathering interesting things to put in the magazine. One of those things is almost like a manifesto, a lecture from Scott Foust, 'How to make your life into an art object.'

He sounds very idealistic but in fact he's very realistic.

He does not care about power, but about beauty, and is doubting all the rush in this modern living.

It's a kids toy, you can record anything you want with microphone directly on 'vinyl', it's more like thick plastic. Sleeves and innersleeves to customize came with it,

Wow, wish I had one.

DE VINYLRECORDER 2010

...terwijl je een cd afspeelt, graveert de machine met een diamantnaald de muziek in een blanco vinylplaat. Eén - dure - naald is in principe goed voor een honderdtal platen, maar hoe luider de muziek die je opneemt, hoe korter de levensduur van de naald. De pauzes tussen de verschillende tracks moet je wel zelf creëren door de naald telkens manueel te verzetten. Maar volgens Sourisseau is het allemaal 'erg simpel'.

Het begon met een bevriende dj, die de gebroeders Fritz en Ulrich Sourisseau uit Baden-Württemberg, in Zuid-Duitsland, vroeg een toestel te ontwerpen waarmee hij zijn eigen platen zou kunnen maken. Dat werd de T560, een handgemaakte vinylrecorder die tegenwoordig voor een goede 3.000 euro te koop is. Het toestel moet wel op een bestaande platendraaier worden geïnstalleerd.

Ulrich Sourisseau: 'We hebben drie soorten klanten: fans van oude jukeboxen die ook nieuwe singles in hun machines willen, kleine platenlabels die de albums van hun artiesten ook op vinyl willen uitbrengen, en dj's die compilaties willen maken en voor wie we een opnamedienst hebben.'

De broers zijn overtuigd van de meerwaarde van vinyl ten opzichte van modernere digitale opnametechnieken, zoals de cd. 'Bij digitale opnames worden de geluidsgolven in fracties opgesplitst. Daardoor wordt de muziek die je opneemt als het ware in trapjes weergegeven. Denk maar aan de volumeregeling bij digitale muziek: die gebeurt ook nooit rechtlijnig, maar met tussenstappen. Met analoge opnamevormen, zoals vinyl, is dat niet mogelijk. Die ronden alles af, waardoor je meer natuurlijke overgangen krijgt. En dat creëert het typische vinylgeluid dat liefhebbers vaak als “vol, of “warm, omschrijven.'

Met de recorder ligt dat vinylgeluid binnen handbereik, of het nu op 33, 45 of 78 toeren is. Maar wordt de kostprijs geen spelbreker? Sourisseau: 'We zijn niet van plan die prijs te drukken. Integendeel, waarschijnlijk zullen we hem nog wat verhogen. De recorder is volledig handgemaakt en we willen zelf kunnen bepalen wie hem koopt. Het moet iets exclusiefs blijven. We hebben ook geen businessplan: we zien wel wat de toekomst brengt.'

Geen kunstobject

Een leuk speeltje dus, die vinylrecorder, en ongetwijfeld een blikvanger in de woonkamer, maar zit de echte platenliefhebber hierop te wachten? Jan Van Regenmortel van de Gentse platenzaak Music Mania is niet onder de indruk wanneer we hem erover aanspreken. 'Mensen die platen kopen, doen dat vooral omdat ze het kunstobject appreciëren. De hoes, het design, de teksten. Net als een boek met een hardcover is een plaat een kwaliteitsobject en veel mensen betalen daar graag iets meer voor. Maar die extra's heb je niet als je zelf je plaat maakt.'

Bob Driege van de muziekwinkel Vinylla even verderop is het daarmee eens. 'Je kunt dan misschien wel je eigen exemplaar maken, maar als verzamelaar ben je daar niets mee. Omdat de oplages meestal erg laag liggen, zijn authentieke vinyluitgaves echte waardeobjecten. Een tweedehandsplaat stijgt heel snel in waarde, in tegenstelling tot een cd. Maar met zo'n zelfgefabriceerde kopie ben je natuurlijk niets. En dan de kostprijs: daar zit niet eens een turntable of een versterker bij. Nee, ik vraag mij echt af wie zoiets in godsnaam zal kopen.'

Alleen voor aficionado's dus, al lijkt Driege op het einde van het gesprek al wat minder sceptisch. 'Bedankt voor de informatie', zegt hij. 'Nu ga ik wat klanten bellen.'

Katie Paterson recorded the sound of 3 glaciers (Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull and Solheimajökull) on Iceland. She then pressed those recordings on ice record made of melt water from those glaciers. The records were played on 3 turntables and it took almost 2 hours till they were completely melted. You can listen to one here.
